Das kunstseidene Mädchen - A Solo Theatre Piece with Christina Wouters
Südbahnhof, Krefeld, Germany
I will be a gleam. Do you want to know what a gleam is?
At eighteen, stenotypist Doris leaves her home in the Rhineland and moves to Berlin to become famous. In search of luxury, love, and success, she throws herself into the whirl of city life - and encounters a succession of lovers, the fear of poverty, and finally Ernst, with whom she can live rent-free. If only his ex-wife, to whom he still clings, were not in the picture…
This solo theatre piece with Christina Wouters is based on Irmgard Keun's contemporary novel from 1932, which was a major success in the Weimar Republic before the Nazi regime banned it in 1933. The novel depicts the social and economic hardships of the era and the narrow constraints women faced - often dependent on relationships with men. Rediscovered in the late 1970s, it remains a classic of modern literature.
