Doris, an 18-year-old stenographer, leaves her home in the Rhineland and moves to Berlin to become someone extraordinary. She dreams of fame and throws herself into the life of the big city. Chasing luxury, love and success, she is confronted with reality - a string of lovers and the constant fear of poverty.

Then she meets Ernst, with whom she can live rent-free. If only he weren't still hung up on his ex-wife...

The play is based on Irmgard Keun's 1932 novel, published just before the Nazi seizure of power. The book was a major success in the Weimar Republic before it was banned by the Nazi regime in 1933. Beyond the social and economic hardships of the era, it highlights the limited options available to women at the time, who often depended on relationships with men to get by. Rediscovered in the late 1970s, the novel remains a classic of literary modernism.
