Waltz for Non-Dancers - A Narrative Concert in Three-Four Time
Lindenbrauerei Unna, Germany
5 €
The Unna City Library and the Culture and Communication Centre Lindenbrauerei present:
How many waltz kings are there really? Was the Danube Waltz first sung or danced?
Did you know that the Viennese waltz became socially acceptable thanks to a Spaniard, and just a few years later was banned at the Tsar's court?
That the authorities around 1800 considered it subversive, while the nationally-minded Germans of later times elevated it to the status of protected cultural heritage?
There is much to tell about the waltz - historical and anecdotal stories. Above all, however, the musical programme of this evening demonstrates the versatility of waltz music.
Martin Brödemann and Thomas Eicher create in this narrative concert a musical panorama of the waltz with many cultural-historical facets between the 18th and 21st centuries, between New York, London, Vienna, Paris and St. Petersburg, between serious and entertainment music, between dance and concert waltzes by Schubert, Brahms, Chopin, Puccini, Shostakovich, Stolz, Strauss, Lehár and many others - with virtuoso pieces and familiar melodies from different styles and periods.
