EXPERIMENT I | With works by the master and a world premiere by Laura Steenberge (*1981)

"Early music" - for many still a provocative term. "You have to know so much to play this music!" - anyone who discusses the repertoire between 1600 and 1750 with so-called "modern" musicians knows this refrain. Yet "knowledge" is impossible given the sheer abundance of contradictory sources; the myth persists nonetheless.

THE PRESENT embarks as a detective on an experiment and makes contact with the past. The "Italian Madrigals" SWV 1-19 and a world premiere by American composer Laura Steenberge serve as a vehicle to directly question Heinrich Schütz about his creative work.

With a wink, the artist in residence poses questions at the start of the music festival: Will we succeed in making contact with Heinrich Schütz? Will the composer answer the ghost telephone?

About the venue: Dom St. Peter und Paul

The Dom St. Peter und Paul is a late-Romanesque and Gothic cathedral in Zeitz, Saxony-Anhalt, whose origins date back to the 10th century. It served as the seat of the bishops of Zeitz-Naumburg and houses the burial chapel of the Moritzburg palace complex. The cathedral regularly hosts concerts and cultural events, making use of its remarkable acoustics and historic interior.
