Jewish Life - Past and Present — Alter jüdischer Friedhof Fürth, Fürth

After Jews were expelled from the imperial cities in the late Middle Ages, Fürth became the religious centre of Jewish life in southern Germany. Political power struggles worked in favour of the Jews' legal standing in Fürth. By the 18th century, the city had several synagogues, prayer houses, religious schools and its own hospital. Fürth was also one of Europe's leading centres of Hebrew printing.

The Old Jewish Cemetery stands as a remarkable testament to this history and will be visited briefly at the start of the city tour.
