After Jews were expelled from the imperial cities of the Holy Roman Empire in the late Middle Ages, Fürth grew into a major religious centre of Jewish life in southern Germany. Political rivalries worked in the Jews' favour legally, and by the 18th century the city was home to several synagogues, prayer houses, religious schools and its own hospital. Fürth was also one of Europe's leading centres of Hebrew printing.
The Old Jewish Cemetery stands as a remarkable testament to this history and receives a short visit at the start of the city tour.
