Curse, Fortune and Many Tricks — Alter Stadtsaal, Rathaushof, Speyer

Spitz & Stumpf bring the rise of the Habsburgs to the stage as a comedy spectacle. A revival in slightly shortened form.

The rise of a dynasty in the Middle Ages. What sounds harmless and somewhat tedious is actually a blend of crime drama, daily soap opera, and comedy. 250 years of German history that perfectly matches the motto of Bernhard Weller and Götz Valter: "It just keeps happening!" For not only the Habsburgs, but also the Wittelsbachs, the Nassaus, the Luxembourgs, the Czechs - everyone at that time wanted to "be king". That's why there were far too often two kings at the same time. There were kings who never appeared. There were dead kings who continued to rule. There were kings with three crowns and kings without any crown. Plus kings who were emperors, kings who never became emperors, and kings who also wanted to be popes... Speaking of popes: there were holy popes who were completely useless, and even popes in stockings. There were times when three popes ruled simultaneously, and - to close the circle - there were popes who wanted to be emperors. And the Habsburgs kept appearing again and again. A political "jumble" of epic proportions, made for Weller and Valter to bring to the stage in their characteristic, unmistakable comic manner.

After both retired their beloved alter egos Friedel Spitz and Eugen "Eichen" Stumpf, they "dust off" history and manage - with more than 20 quick role changes included - to entertain their audience brilliantly. Turbulent, humorous, and incredibly funny. With full deployment of imagination and comic artistry, but always with an eye on historical sources.

A revival. The play was created on the occasion of the state exhibition "The Habsburgs in the Middle Ages. The Rise of a Dynasty".
