Jugend-Gitarrenorchester Baden-Württemberg
Alter Stadtsaal, Rathaushof, Speyer, Germany

Admittedly, JGO sounds a bit like a piece of legislation from the justice ministry. In fact, it stands for an ensemble founded in 1991, made up of around 30 musicians selected by the Landesmusikrat Baden-Württemberg from across Germany - most of them prize-winners at "Jugend musiziert" or other competitions. All members are between 15 and 27 years old. Past tours have taken the orchestra to Chile, Mexico, Argentina, Cuba and Australia. On the podium are Helmut Oesterreich and Christian Wernicke, both well-known figures in the classical guitar world.
The ensemble's repertoire spans classical works, jazz, pop and contemporary pieces, including compositions written specifically for the JGO - among them works by Terry Riley, Martin Letelier and, most recently, Haosi Howard Chen. Alongside the guitar, various other plucked instruments feature throughout.
