Sophie Rennert (mezzo-soprano)
Ammiel Bushakevitz (piano)
A song recital featuring works by Robert Schumann, Hugo Wolf, Franz Schubert, and Gustav Mahler
Sophie Rennert is an Austrian mezzo-soprano who has earned international recognition above all as a Lieder interpreter. She studied singing in Vienna and developed an early affinity for the art song - its fusion of textual insight, tonal colour, and chamber-music intimacy became the hallmark of her artistry. Rennert appears regularly in leading Lieder series and festivals across Europe, collaborating with distinguished pianists on dramaturgically considered programmes spanning Romanticism to the present day. Her repertoire ranges from Schubert, Schumann, and Brahms through Mahler and Strauss to rarely performed women composers and contemporary song literature. Critics consistently praise her clear diction, nuanced phrasing, and ability to make lyrical moods feel immediate. Alongside opera and concert engagements, the intimate world of the Lied remains her deepest artistic calling.
Born in Jerusalem, Ammiel Bushakevitz began playing the piano at the age of four. As a Lieder accompanist, soloist, and chamber musician he has performed worldwide - including at Carnegie Hall in New York, Wigmore Hall in London, the Philharmonie in Paris, Konzerthaus Berlin, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, and in Shanghai. He has appeared at major festivals including Salzburg, Lucerne, Bayreuth, Aix-en-Provence, and the Schubertiade. Raised in South Africa, he studied in Leipzig and Paris with Phillip Moll and Alfred Brendel. As one of the last private pupils of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, he is especially devoted to the Lied and works with leading singers including Ilker Arcayürek, Christian Gerhaher, Julia Kleiter, and Konstantin Krimmel. In the 2024/25 season he performs internationally, including in London, Montreal, Amsterdam, Barcelona, and Munich.
