Singet dem Herrn — St. Marien Weißenfels, Weißenfels

RENAISSANCE I | Choral works by Heinrich Schütz, Johannes Brahms and Moritz Hauptmann

"I was thus moved to dedicate the first part of my choral music to this famous choir as a modest gift" - with these words Heinrich Schütz dedicated his "Geistliche Chormusik" to the Thomanerchor in 1648. When Schütz died in 1672 at an advanced age, more modern repertoire came to dominate the programmes of this venerable choir and his works fell into obscurity. From 1860 onwards, Thomaskantor figures such as Moritz Hauptmann (1792-1868) began reintroducing selected movements into their motet programmes, laying the groundwork for a tradition of preservation that continues to this day.

The Thomanerchor's last guest appearance in Weißenfels was 28 years ago. The time has come for a festive concert with a large ensemble, offering a glimpse into the early reception of Schütz's music around 1900. Alongside works by Heinrich Schütz, the programme features pieces by Moritz Hauptmann and Johannes Brahms - Baroque convinces Romanticism, Romanticism convinces the present!
