Fürth's Grand Promenade

Hornschuchpromenade, Fürth, Germany

This walk takes you along two of Fürth's most splendid Wilhelmine-era boulevards: Königswarterstraße and Hornschuchpromenade. Between Luisenstraße and Jakobinenstraße, grand residential buildings in Historicist and Art Nouveau styles were erected between 1883 and 1904 - a promenade layout of this scale remains unmatched in Fürth to this day.
The fact that the Ludwigsbahn railway once ran along the green central strip was seen as a mark of modernity. The ornate facades speak to the wealth of their former owners, among them well-known Fürth families such as the picture-book publishers Löwensohn and the brewery owner Evora - all prominent benefactors of the city.
