İlhan Erşahin was born in Stockholm in 1965 to a Turkish father and a Swedish mother - a background that perhaps explains why he has never been content with a single musical path. The saxophonist started out in rock and reggae, moved into jazz, relocated to New York, and absorbed hip-hop, dub and trip-hop along the way, notably through his project Wax Poetic. He composed film scores and in 2002 founded the club Nublu in the East Village, which eventually spawned a record label of the same name.
In 2008 he launched Istanbul Sessions in Turkey, with a clear ambition: "A rock-dance feeling. We wanted to play instrumental music for an audience that dances to it." Now the quartet returns with the album "Mahalle".
