The Mousetrap

A woman has been strangled in London. Police are broadcasting a description of the suspect on every channel - though on this bitterly cold winter's day, there is no shortage of people fitting the profile: "medium height, dark overcoat, light scarf, felt hat".

Mollie Ralston and her husband Giles are opening their inherited country house, Monkswell Manor near London, as a guest house. As the snowfall thickens, worries mount: will the pipes freeze? Do they have enough food if they get snowed in? Despite the drifting roads, the expected guests arrive one by one. Faced with a collection of utterly mismatched strangers stuck together for the foreseeable future, more than one of them would gladly make a run for it - but the snow has buried any hope of leaving.

The police send a sergeant on skis, and unease turns to dread. Will there be more murders? Sure enough, the next body does not take long to appear. But who will be caught in the mousetrap next - the killer, or their next victim?
