PRODUCTION
This staging deliberately steps back from the countless interpretations the work has accumulated over more than two hundred years. The Lindau Magic Flute is set in a fairy-tale world - not least because the fairy-tale genre uses logical breaks and paradoxes to genuinely enchant. Every audience member is invited to find and invent their own story within the opera.
STAGE HISTORY
The world premiere took place on 30 September 1791 at the Freihaus-Theater auf der Wieden, a suburban Viennese stage. By October 1791 the work had already reached nearly twenty performances, and it remained a fixture of the Viennese repertoire in the months that followed. A year later, on 25 October 1792, it was performed to great acclaim in Prague, then in Munich, in 1793 in Frankfurt am Main, and in 1794 in Berlin and Weimar.
