Lachen wenns zum Heulen ist (Laughing When You'd Rather Cry)
A cabaret piece by Wolfgang Schaller
On a railway platform, three people wait: Dörte, an unemployed pig-ear vendor with dreams of stardom (Birgit Schaller); Walentin Karl, the know-it-all doctor-to-be (Alexander Pluquett); and Fridolin Kasper, a Saxon whose company Särge & Co thrives precisely when everyone else is struggling (Frank Weiland). Amid every crisis imaginable, their motto holds: laugh, even when you'd rather cry. Wolfgang Schaller's darkly biting, absurdist texts reflect a reality caught between loud cheerfulness and quiet reflection. Jens Wagner and Volker Fiebig, as always, bring out the ensemble's musical flair.
After the celebrated premiere, the DNN wrote: "Laughter wakes you up, and sharp wordplay gets the brain going. But sometimes the laugh catches in your throat. This trio of rebellious ordinary folk rattles off sharp social satire, then turns - with bitter mockery - the great wheels of our civilization, which have long been spinning in the sand."
