25 Years of NINE ELEVEN: Attack on the Twin Towers in New York - Global Politics in Hamburg
Reading and Discussion

The 21st century began on September 11, 2001, with an event both symbolically charged and genuinely catastrophic: Islamists carried out an unprecedented attack on America. The Twin Towers in the heart of New York collapsed - broadcast live across the world. 3,000 people died in the buildings and hijacked aircraft. This day has been seared into collective memory: even today, almost everyone recalls exactly what they were doing at that moment.

Hamburg was the starting point for the attacks. Here, computer science student Mohammed Atta lived alongside other terrorists as a "sleeper agent" and meticulously planned the assault.

Olaf Scholz was Hamburg's Senator for Internal Affairs at the time. The evening asks how he remembers this day, what it meant for the Hanseatic city - and how the former chancellor assesses the global significance of the event today.
