Attack from the Right - An Evening with Christoph Bartmann
Literaturhaus München, Munich, Germany
Moderation: Jens Bisky
How is German culture faring? Christoph Bartmann, longtime director of Goethe Institutes in Copenhagen, New York, Warsaw and other cities, demonstrates in his new essay (Hanser) that budget constraints and, above all, political indifference are gradually weakening the cultural landscape. What is already a frightening reality in Poland, the USA and other nations has now reached Germany - right-wing populist parties have recognized their opportunity. For them, culture is a battleground where they can impose their anti-modern, ethno-nationalist and homophobic ideas. Bartmann analyzes these mechanisms with great precision; his book is both a wake-up call and a hopeful plea.
