The seven deadly sins - pride, envy, wrath, sloth, greed, gluttony and lust - originate in the Christian tradition and have been articulated since the Middle Ages by philosophers and theologians as moral failings that lead one astray from God's intended path. Set against them are the seven virtues, inherited from antiquity and later expanded by Christianity: wisdom, justice, courage, temperance, faith, hope and love.
