The Silly Augustine - A Circus Fairy Tale by Otfried Preußler

The circus comes to town - and with it the world-famous silly August, king of jesters and star of the ring. While the popular clown delights the audience twice daily, his wife Augustine has her hands full in the trailer behind the circus tent: she helps the clown children Gugga and Guggo with their schoolwork, looks after the clown baby Guggilein, washes the colorful costumes, cooks and bakes, and keeps the circus wagon in order. Deep in her heart, though, she dreams of performing as a clown in the ring herself.

The silly August has little understanding for his wife's artistic ambitions - and is annoyed by the director, who wants to keep modernizing the program. Then an unexpected opportunity arises for Augustine to perform in the ring. Will she manage to make the audience laugh?

Since September 2025, Junge Bühne Mainz has regularly transformed the large theater hall in M8 Mainz into the ring of the fictional Circus Augustini. The production is based on Otfried Preußler's children's classic and presents an original stage adaptation about emancipation and equality - performed on stage and in a real circus ring in the center of the hall.
