Description was written before the event

Under the title "Raices unidas" (united roots), Cuban pianist Omar Sosa and the NDR Bigband collaborate for the third time. Sosa, shaped by the Afro-Cuban religion of Santería, has long explored the musical traditions of Latin America, the USA, and Africa - in his compositions, he reveals that large parts of Central and South American music have their roots in Africa.

The NDR Bigband was founded in 1946 as a dance orchestra in Hamburg. Its 17 musicians have toured throughout Europe, North and South America, and Asia - they come to Weikersheim for the first time, trading the Elbphilharmonie for an evening at the Tauberphilharmonie.

The concert opens the 2026/27 jazz season.

Omar Sosa - composition and piano
Jaques Morelenbaum - arrangement
Steffen Schorn - conductor

About: NDR Bigband

NDR Bigband is a professional big band based in Hamburg, operating under the umbrella of German public broadcaster NDR. Founded in 1945, it is one of the oldest radio big bands in Europe, covering a wide jazz spectrum from swing and bebop to contemporary fusion, and has collaborated with numerous international jazz artists.

About the venue: Tauberphilharmonie Weikersheim

The Tauberphilharmonie is a modern concert hall in Weikersheim, opened in 2014 on the banks of the Tauber river. With around 820 seats, it serves as the main venue for the Jeunesses Musicales Deutschland and hosts classical concerts, chamber music, and youth music events throughout the year. The building's striking contemporary architecture contrasts with the historic Renaissance town surrounding it.
