Serge has bought himself a monochromatic oil painting - white with white stripes, and quite expensive. This painting sparks a dispute among three friends: Serge is delighted, his friend Marc thinks it is simply "shit", and Yvan refuses to take sides to avoid falling out with anyone. In the process, deep rifts open up, and their long-standing friendship suddenly hangs in the balance.

For Yasmina Reza, the painting serves as a catalyst to question the three men - their feelings, their friendship, their sense of self - in a subtle, psychologically precise, and yet comic way.
