My Friend Harvey

Elwood P. Dowd is a kind, peaceable gentleman who loves whisky and sees something good in every person. He is constantly accompanied by an invisible yet visible friend and drinking companion - a rabbit named Harvey. But Harvey is more than mere imagination: he is a "pooka," a spirit in animal form.

The constant presence of the 2.10-meter-tall white rabbit tests the patience of those around him - some even swear they see him themselves. In desperation, Elwood's sister Veta decides to have her brother committed to a psychiatric hospital. Yet Elwood's disarming kindness does not stop at the hospital walls: it confuses the staff and ultimately forces even the chief psychiatrist, Dr. Chumley, to doubt his own perception. Just before the "healing procedure," Elwood's family makes an unexpected decision.

This Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy by Mary Chase enjoyed great success on Broadway long before the famous film adaptation with James Stewart (1950). The play amusingly asks who is really mad here - and in doing so casts a penetrating look at so-called civilized society.
