Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up aboard a spacecraft - far from Earth, with no memory of who he is or why he was sent into the depths of space. Slowly, in fragments, his memories begin to return. He realizes not only that he was once a science teacher back on Earth, but also that he holds a central role in a race against time - and that his mission is critically important. A mysterious substance is threatening the Sun itself, and with it the survival of all humanity. To prevent a global catastrophe, Grace draws on his scientific knowledge and devises unconventional solutions. Along the way, he stumbles upon a surprising connection that suggests he may not be entirely alone in his fight.
