Die Frauen des Rembetiko - Concert Project with Theodora Baka and the Ensemble "Ta Perix"

A musical tribute to the great female voices of Greek rebetiko: Theodora Baka performs songs celebrating the lives, loves and longings of women in urban Greece from the 1940s to the 1960s. She is joined by the ensemble "Ta Perix" from Kavala in northern Greece. Achilleas Anastasiadis hosts the evening and plays baglamas with the ensemble.

Rebetiko is often seen as a male-dominated genre - an impression shaped by its origins in socially marginalised communities. Yet women played a profound role in its development from the very beginning: as the driving force behind songs of pain, loss and despair, as well as love, joy and ecstasy. Singers such as Sotiria Bellou, Stella Haskil and Marika Ninou left a lasting mark on the genre through their voices and interpretations.
