The Women of Rembetiko - Concert Project with Theodora Baka and the Ensemble "Ta Perix"

A musical tribute to the great women of Greek rebetiko: singer Theodora Baka performs songs that capture the lives, loves and longings of women in urban Greece from the 1940s to the 1960s. She is joined by the ensemble "Ta Perix" from Kavala in northern Greece, whose traditional line-up and stylistic authenticity bring the sound of that era back to life. Achilleas Anastasiadis hosts the evening and contributes to the ensemble's distinctive sound on the baglamas.

Although rebetiko is often perceived as a predominantly male genre - partly due to the era of its origins and the socially marginalised milieu it emerged from - women played a profound role in shaping it from the very beginning. They were not only central inspirations for many songs expressing pain, loss and despair, but also love, joy and ecstasy. Exceptional singers such as Sotiria Bellou, Stella Haskil, Marika Ninou and many others left a decisive mark on the genre through their unique voices and interpretations.
