What does it really mean to be American? New York, late 1990s: Lily Chen, daughter of Chinese immigrants, works as an unpaid intern at a media company. She falls for Matthew Maier, heir to a billion-dollar business. From this encounter, Rachel Khong - born in Malaysia in 1985 and raised in California - weaves a multigenerational family story about origin and belonging.

Since her debut "Goodbye, Vitamin" in 2017, Rachel Khong has been one of the most celebrated voices in contemporary American literature. Her new novel (Kiepenheuer & Witsch, translated by Tobias Schnettler), praised by critics and readers alike, spans decades and continents with psychological precision.
