Thumbelina - Based on a Fairy Tale by H.C. Andersen

A woman who longs for a child plants a magical grain of barley in the earth. From this seed grows a tiny girl - no bigger than a thumb, and so she is named Thumbelina. The world awaits her full of adventures and dangers. One day she is abducted by a toad, but manages to escape. Now she must find her own way home in an unfamiliar, wild world. Loneliness accompanies her on her journey. Though she meets animals like butterflies and May bugs that are similarly small, they prove to be neither true companions nor friends. Will Thumbelina find happiness in this often so cold world? Perhaps the chirping song of the swallow holds the answer...

The fantastical fairy tales of Danish poet Hans Christian Andersen have held a permanent place in the repertoire of the independent theatre Junge Bühne Mainz since 2019. After "The Little Mermaid" (2019-2022) and "The Brave Tin Soldier & the Paper Dancer" (2022-2025), "Thumbelina" is already the third stage adaptation of an Andersen fairy tale directed by Philip Barth for Junge Bühne Mainz.
