Hansel and Gretel
Theater Am Spalterhals, Barsinghausen, Germany
The family musical "Hansel and Gretel" by Kleine Oper Bad Homburg is a child-friendly adaptation of the classical fairy-tale opera by Engelbert Humperdinck and Adelheid Wette.
The romantic operatic material has been fascinatingly condensed for children and reworked into a lively, entertaining musical - enhanced with colourful costumes, elaborate stage design, striking lighting effects and pyrotechnics. Piano music and singing are performed live. Rock and pop come from a CD. Kleine Oper Bad Homburg is renowned for its brilliant stage productions.
The story told is simple and follows the Brothers Grimm fairy tale almost exactly. However, the parents in Humperdinck's fairy-tale opera are friendlier than those in the original story. Famous folk songs such as "Suse, liebe Suse..." and "Brüderchen, komm tanz mit mir..." have been incorporated into the music and are well known to many young and adult audiences.
The wicked witch lures the children to her house herself, and then things get hectic. Of course, there is a happy ending. The father finds his children safe and sound, and Hansel... but no, we won't spoil any more at this point.
