2500 years before "Succession", the ancient Greek poet Aeschylus invented the TV series format: in three parts, he told the story of a dysfunctional ruling dynasty whose members become playthings of the gods and destroy each other in a cycle of guilt and vengeance.

Australian-Swiss theatre maker Simon Stone, known for radical reinterpretations of classical works, has stripped the myth of its patina and brought the old story of Agamemnon, Clytemnestra, Orestes and Electra into the present day. He shows us a family torn apart by loss, desperately trying to escape their own history. And he poses questions that concern us all: Why do traumas pass down through generations? Can we break free from the seemingly unstoppable spiral of violence and retaliation? Where does justice end and vigilantism begin? Stone's Oresteia is refreshingly modern, deeply human and - perhaps his greatest achievement - surprisingly funny.
