Who always had to pay the price in history? We from Baden! Volkmar Staub dissects his native corner of South Baden as an example of German identity in the first quarter of the 21st century - the Alemannians, after whom the whole Federal Republic is named Allemagne or Alemania abroad, an underestimated people on the southwestern edge of Germany. At the same time, an absurd gallop through Baden's history: from the ancient Alemannians in the Havel swamps to the cuckoo-clock Alemannians of a mountain village in Venezuela, from the revolutionary carnival procession of 1848 to the march on Moscow under Napoleon - told with pace, cunning, and shamelessly credible tall tales.

Staub pursues the three most important philosophical questions that preoccupy an Alemannian: Where do we come from? Where are we going? And above all: What do we drink while doing it?
