In this lecture demonstration, Claire Cunningham offers insight into her movement style "Quanimacy". She shows how the use, repurposing and estrangement of her crutches - alongside a deliberate move away from dance techniques developed for non-disabled bodies - have shaped her artistic practice. She describes how her focus has shifted from the relationship between her crutches and her body to the question of how her crutches connect her to the world, and what impact disability experience has on social ideas about knowledge, values and mutual dependency.
Claire Cunningham is based in Glasgow and works as a performer and multidisciplinary stage artist. In 2021 she received the Deutschen Tanzpreis for "outstanding artistic development in dance". Since October 2023 she has been Einstein Professor for "Choreography, Dance and Disability Arts" at the Hochschulübergreifendes Zentrum Tanz (HZT) in Berlin. Her solo Songs of the Wayfarer premiered in November 2024, was nominated at the UK Theatre Awards 2025 in the dance category, and continues to tour internationally.
Performed in English with German surtitles, recommended for ages 14 and up. Duration: approx. 70 min.
