FJARILL — Kapelle Waldfriedhof Wedel, Wedel

The chapel at the Waldfriedhof is a rare setting for attentive listening. For the music of FJARILL, it would be hard to imagine a more fitting venue at the Wedeler Musiktage.

The Swedish-South African duo - singer and pianist Aino Löwenmark, and violinist, guitarist and singer Hanmari Spiegel - has spent nearly two decades developing a musical language of their own, somewhere between folk, chamber music and multilingual songwriting.

FJARILL comes to the Wedeler Musiktage with Walden, their tenth album. Songs in English, German, Swedish and Afrikaans trace biographical threads connecting Sweden, South Africa and Hamburg. Two voices, violin, guitar and piano produce music of sonic delicacy, openness and careful attention to what lies between the notes.

FJARILL has long been primarily a live ensemble. It is in concert that this music finds its particular power: not through grand gestures, but through closeness, concentration and the ease with which voices and instruments keep forming new relationships.

In the chapel, that music meets its audience at close range - an intense listening experience that this place makes possible.
