How robots learn to navigate our world: from first steps to helping out right at your front door

Robots are slowly making their way into cities - but have you ever seen one in action? A postal worker's route from the delivery van to the front door looks straightforward, but for a robot it's an obstacle course. Following traffic rules, carrying heavy parcels, climbing kerbs, and then finding the right door on top of it all. FZI Forschungszentrum Informatik in Karlsruhe is researching how robots can be taught all of this - from learning to walk to navigating unfamiliar environments.
