Young Michael Jackson (Juliano Krue Valdi) grows up as the eighth of ten children under the strict guidance of his father Joe (Colman Domingo), groomed for a music career from an early age. With the family band Jackson Five he scores his first hits; by 13 he is already going solo.

As an adult (Jaafar Jackson), music remains the centre of his life. In the late 1970s, during film work, he meets Diana Ross (Kat Graham) and producer Quincy Jones (Kendrick Sampson) - an encounter that fundamentally reshapes his musical direction. The Jones-produced album "Off the Wall" (1979) is a major success, surpassed in 1982 by the groundbreaking and best-selling "Thriller". At the same time, his relationship with father Joe breaks down: Jackson fires him as manager and replaces him with lawyer John Branca (Miles Teller).
