The Domplatz in Erfurt is a vast medieval square flanked by the Cathedral of St. Mary and the Collegiate Church of St. Severus. Every summer it serves as an open-air stage for the Domstufen-Festspiele, one of Germany's largest open-air opera and musical festivals, with a natural auditorium of up to 25,000 seats built into the cathedral steps.
