About

Caravaggio (Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, 1571–1610) was an Italian Baroque painter whose work profoundly influenced European art. He was celebrated for his dramatic use of light and shadow (chiaroscuro) and his strikingly realistic depiction of human figures. Among his most famous works is the cycle of paintings on the life of St. Matthew in the church of San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome.
