Maria Kwaśniewska (1912–2000) was a Polish track-and-field athlete specialising in the javelin throw. She won a bronze medal at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games. She became notable for her act of defiance during the Olympic ceremony, refusing to give the Nazi salute to Adolf Hitler — a gesture that later became a symbol of personal resistance.
