Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475–1564) was an Italian Renaissance sculptor, painter, architect, and poet. He is best known for the frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome and for sculptures such as David and the Pietà. He is widely regarded as one of the most important artists in the history of Western art.
