Description was written before the event

"Mountains and Friends"

An encounter with Krzysztof Wielicki - a mountaineer who, as the fifth person in the world, has summited fourteen eight-thousanders, the Crown of the Himalayas and Karakoram. Three of these peaks he climbed in winter as the first in the world - Mount Everest (1980, with Leszek Cichy, as part of an expedition led by Andrzej Zawada), Kangchenjunga, and Lhotse. Wielicki is also the author of solo ascents on Broad Peak, Dhaulagiri, Shishapangma, Gasherbrum II, and Nanga Parbat.

His story spans decades of expeditions in the Himalayas and Karakoram - building relationships within a team, taking risks, solo climbs, and overcoming personal weaknesses. Wielicki also speaks about a later stage of his career: organizing expeditions to K2, Nanga Parbat, and Broad Peak, including coordinating a 2018 rescue operation in which Denis Urubko and Adam Bielecki saved Elisabeth Revol descending from Nanga Parbat after an expedition during which Tomasz Mackiewicz died.

Krzysztof Wielicki was born on January 5, 1950, in Szklarka Przygrodzicka. He is a recipient of, among others, the Princess of Asturias Award in sports, the Golden Ice Axe, the Super Kolos for his mountaineering achievements, and the Knight's Cross of the Order of Poland's Rebirth. Since 2001, he has been a member of The Explorers Club. He is also an author and co-author of books.
