Balladyna
Teatr im. Juliusza Osterwy w Lublinie, Poland
A production directed by Jan Hussakowski engages with Juliusz Słowacki's "Balladyna" through the lens of Susan Sontag's essay "Against Interpretation" - the creators ask whether we can feel classical literature rather than merely analyze it through school summaries and footnotes. Grotesque and tragic elements interweave from the opening scenes.
The scenography centers on three projection screens that reference the tradition of 19th-century theatrical backdrops while opening space for multimedia forms of expression. Digital annotations and summaries become part of the dramaturgy, and actors move between characters, balancing irony with full gravity.
The production participates in the X Competition for Staging Classical Works of Polish and European Literature "Living Classics".
Recommended for viewers aged 13 and up. The production uses intense lighting effects, strobe lighting, and loud music. Cigarette smoke appears (electronic cigarettes).
