Thematic Walk: In the Footsteps of the Film "People of the Vistula"
Contemporary Art Centre "Znaki Czasu" in Toruń, Poland
Toruń is truly beautiful! I am especially captivated by its historical monuments. The Town Hall, the Church of St. John, the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of St. James, the Burgher's Palace, and the ruins of the Teutonic Castle made an enormous impression on me. The beautifully arranged Bydgoszcz Suburb delighted me greatly. No European capital should be ashamed of parks arranged so splendidly - Ina Benita enthused in the pages of the "Bydgoszcz Daily".
An interview with one of the brightest stars of Polish cinema appeared in late July 1936, when spelling differed from today's, and the actress along with the rest of the film crew under the direction of Aleksander Ford and Jerzy Zarzyski was filming "People of the Vistula" in Toruń. It is one of the first films in the history of Polish cinema to address important and painful social issues. The main roles were played by Ina Benita, Jerzy Pichelski (born on a river, though not that one), Stanisława Wysocka - and Toruń itself. The city appears on screen frequently, and its role in this story extends far beyond location shooting.
Aleksander Ford's film was based on the novel "The Vistula" by Helena Boguszewska and Jerzy Kornacki, whose action also takes place in Toruń - there are many traces to discover here. The walk in the footsteps of the production will take place on September 19 at 11:00; meeting point in front of the Centre for Contemporary Art at Wały gen. Sikorskiego 13.
