Atanas Valkov: Piano Odyseja
Studio im. Budki Suflera w Polskim Radiu Lublin, Poland
"Piano Odyseja" is an experimental piano project by Atanas Valkov developed over three years - a performative gesture that escapes traditional definitions of a recital. Drawing from the language of film music and classical improvisation, the composer deconstructs the instrument's possibilities, treating raw cosmic data as a genuine source of sonic material.
The musical narrative unfolds from contemporary piano forms through variational structures and intense improvisations to experimental AI sonifications and sonoristic textures of the prepared piano. Through collaboration with astronomer Mark McCaughey (former Senior Advisor for Science & Exploration at the European Space Agency), Valkov gained direct access to sound materials from the BepiColombo (ESA/JAXA), PLATO, Cluster, JUICE, Rosetta (ESA), and Cassini-Huygens (NASA/ESA/ASI) missions.
The piano serves as a technological interface. Using Neutone technology, developed by Japanese Qosmo - AI Creativity & Music Lab, the system analyzes pitch and dynamics of the pianist's playing in real time. In the sonification and timbre transfer process, scientific data is continuously transformed into harmonic, spectrally related structures that organically respond to the artist's improvisations.
The entire work emerges at the piano in real time - by layering and looping instrumental parts, Valkov builds multi-layered textures and evolving harmonic structures. Yet at the heart of this process lies pure improvisation: an ephemeral recording of the moment when the artist's physical gesture, cosmic data, and algorithm interact here and now.
