The libretto was written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Nilo Cruz. The opera draws on the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice and tells the story of Frida, embodied by mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard. Frida returns from the afterlife on Day of the Dead to meet Diego again (baritone Carlos Álvarez). This famous couple, known for their turbulent relationship, briefly revive their passionate and painful romance before saying goodbye to the world of the living forever.

The Metropolitan Opera production is conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin. The direction and choreography of this new production, inspired by paintings of Frida and Diego and described by the Los Angeles Times as "full of color and fresh individuality," were created by Deborah Colker.
