A new project by ||ALA|MEDA|| is a dialogue between sharp electronics, bass-driven rhythm, and West African song supported by the sounds of the kora. The Polish group defines their language as tropical-industrial; Noums Dembele complements it with the softness of strings and the lyricism of phrasing.
Dembele is a multi-instrumentalist based in Warsaw from Burkina Faso, playing primarily the kora – a harp deeply rooted in Mandinka culture and the griot caste (jeliya), the singers, storytellers, and keepers of memory. His experience, however, extends beyond a single musical order: he collaborates with both African ensembles and artists from the experimental rock world.
The meeting of Polish electronic-percussive experimentation with deeply rooted traditional music leads to a dense and unexpected form. From repeated formulas and unconventional transformations emerges a texture that engages the body while leaving space for attentive listening.
