A group of gentlemen in bespoke suits organize regular dinner parties to which they invite — in their view — people of a lower social standing. It is a competition: the winner is whoever brings the most foolish guest. One day, several unforeseen situations cause the entire enterprise to spiral out of control, and one of the gentlemen becomes the victim of unexpected complications. Among the guests at this fateful dinner: a tax office employee and an enthusiastic matchstick-house builder whose wife has left him.

Dinner for a Fool by Francis Veber shows how easy it is to confuse foolishness with beautiful difference. The conclusion is summed up by a quote from Gogol: "Who are you laughing at? You are laughing at yourselves!".
