A Man for All Seasons
National Old Theatre named after H. Modrzejewska - Krakow, Poland
Directed by Anka and Wilhelm Sasnal
Large Stage, ul. Jagiellońska 1
Duration: 3 hours 30 minutes
Joseph Marti (Piotr Trojan) is a bookbinder who quits his job after being humiliated by his boss. He ends up at a suburban villa, where he becomes an assistant to engineer and inventor Tobler (Andrzej Konopka) - keeping accounts and correspondence, becoming the confidant of the lady of the house (Agnieszka Żulewska), and above all, must unconditionally believe in his employer's ideas. Gradually he becomes the titular "man for all seasons" - willing to sacrifice his own freedom to keep his job and sense of belonging.
The film by Anka and Wilhelm Sasnal, an adaptation of Robert Walser's prose, unfolds at the intersection of contemporary times and the early 20th century. Joseph's story is a tale not only of work and subordination, but also of the need for acceptance, seduction, and the price of belonging. As the filmmakers say: "Joseph gradually surrenders his freedom and, like a faithful dog, serves his Master and Mistress. The desire for belonging in Marti is greater than his need for freedom".
Following the screening, there will be a meeting with the filmmakers.
