Stuart McCallum shaped the sound of Cinematic Orchestra as guitarist and co-writer from 2004 to 2012. He contributed to the albums Ma Fleur and Live at the Royal Albert Hall, and worked on the Disney soundtrack The Crimson Wing.
In his solo project, McCallum weaves together expansive harmonies, reverb and delay textures, and melodic improvisation. Acoustic guitar tones meet ambient soundscapes, folk melodies blend with jazz harmony, and electronic touches add subtle colour. Influences from English folk songs, jazz standards, and classical music converge into his distinctive voice.
As a collaborator, he has worked with Jordan Rakei, Richard Spaven, Manu Delago, John Surman, and Slowly Rolling Camera. Most recently, he contributed guitar parts to Peter Gabriel's Grammy-winning album i/o.
