STUART McCALLUM (uk) — Jazzclub Tonne, Dresden

Stuart McCallum shaped the distinctive sound of the legendary Cinematic Orchestra for many years as a guitarist and co-author. Between 2004 and 2012, he contributed to the acclaimed albums Ma Fleur and Live at the Royal Albert Hall, and also collaborated on the award-winning Disney soundtrack The Crimson Wing. His atmospheric guitar lines, which effortlessly float between jazz, ambient, and orchestral fullness, became a defining element of Cinematic Orchestra's characteristic sound.

In his solo project, McCallum continues this sonic world while opening it to new directions. His music combines expansive harmonies, floating reverb and delay textures, and virtuosic melodic improvisation into a sound space that feels both intimate and cinematic. Acoustic guitar tones meet ambient soundscapes, folk melodies blend with jazz harmonies and electronic nuances.

This creates compositions of distinctive atmosphere: music that opens time and space, that breathes between silence and sound, discovering new colours in each moment. Inspirations from old English folk songs, jazz standards, and classical music become, in McCallum's hands, a completely personal and unmistakable voice.

As a collaborator, Stuart McCallum is also in demand: he has worked with artists including Jordan Rakei, Richard Spaven, Manu Delago, John Surman, and the band Slowly Rolling Camera, and contributed guitar parts to Peter Gabriel's Grammy-winning album i/o.
