Andrzej Wajda (1926–2016) was a Polish film and theatre director, one of the most significant figures in world cinema. He is best known for films such as Ashes and Diamonds and Katyń, which explore Polish history and national trauma. He received an honorary Academy Award and the Palme d'Or at Cannes for his lifetime achievement.
