Don Kosaken Chor Serge Jaroff

About

Don Kosaken Chor Serge Jaroff is a men's choir founded in January 1921 by Serge Jaroff - a trained church musician and Cossack lieutenant - from Don Cossack exiles interned in the Turkish camp of Çilingir near Istanbul. The ensemble made its concert breakthrough at the Vienna Hofburg in July 1923 and went on to perform across Europe, the Americas and beyond under Jaroff's baton until 1979. Since 2001, the registered trademark and artistic direction have been held by Wanja Hlibka, Jaroff's youngest former soloist, who rebuilt the choir in 1991 and continues to perform from Jaroff's original scores; the current ensemble consists exclusively of Ukrainian singers.
