About

Swan Lake is a ballet by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, first performed at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow on 20 February 1877 - to little success. Its definitive form came in 1895 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, where choreographers Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov shaped the version that virtually every subsequent production draws on. The story of Prince Siegfried and the enchanted swan-princess Odette has made it the most recognised work in the classical ballet repertoire worldwide.
