King Woman is an American doom metal band from San Francisco, formed in 2009 by vocalist and songwriter Kristina Esfandiari. The band blends doom metal, shoegaze, and post-rock into a sound built around Esfandiari's wide-ranging contralto voice and lyrics drawn from her childhood in a charismatic Christian community. Their debut album Created in the Image of Suffering (Relapse Records, 2017) was named one of the best rock albums of the year by Pitchfork; the follow-up Celestial Blues (2021) debuted at #4 on the Billboard Hard Music Albums chart and received universal acclaim on Metacritic.
Esfandiari hinted on social media that new King Woman material in progress may surpass Celestial Blues.
King Woman released the standalone single "Bury" on May 10, 2024, their first new material since Celestial Blues.
"Psychic Wound" from Celestial Blues was re-released as a standalone single by A24 Music on May 10, 2024.
Esfandiari released a second NGHTCRWLR album, O Z, in 2025 via YEAR 0001, continuing her work across multiple projects.
Esfandiari contributed lead vocals to tracks on M83's 2023 album Fantasy.
