About

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) was a German composer and pianist who stands at the hinge between the Classical and Romantic eras. Born in Bonn and based in Vienna from 1792, he reshaped virtually every genre he touched - symphony, string quartet, piano sonata, concerto - and did so while losing his hearing progressively from his late twenties. His nine symphonies, 32 piano sonatas, 16 string quartets and the opera Fidelio remain cornerstones of the Western concert repertoire.
